Short answer: Chinchillas keep their coat clean with a chinchilla specific dust bath 2 to 3 times a week rather than a water bath, because their fur is so dense that it is hard to dry and risks a fungal infection if it gets wet. Keep humidity down and the enclosure from getting too warm.

Chinchillas have one of the densest coats of any pet, which means caring for it works differently from other animals.

Why a dust bath instead of water

A chinchilla's fur is so dense that water soaks in and is difficult to dry. If it gets wet, there is a risk of fungal infection on the skin, so a dust bath made specifically for chinchillas is the more suitable way to clean them.

How to do the dust bath properly

Offer a dust bath about 2 to 3 times a week in a suitably sized container. Do not leave the dust in the cage all the time, as it can irritate the eyes.

Why temperature and humidity matter

Chinchillas are sensitive to heat and to high humidity because of that dense coat. Keep them somewhere well ventilated and no warmer than 24 degrees Celsius.

At Hug & Heal we have vets who understand exotic pets, chinchillas included, for advice on coat care and on the right environment.

Frequently asked questions
