5 Signs Your Pet is Entering Senior Life — and How We Can Help

Small changes at home can tell us a lot. What to watch for, and when to schedule a senior wellness visit.

When does senior life begin?

Small- to mid-size dogs typically enter senior life around 7–8. Large breeds may start around 6. Cats are usually around 10–11. These ages are guides — the more important thing is noticing changes in daily life.

5 signs to watch for

1. Slower movement, hesitating to jump

A pet who used to leap onto the sofa now hesitates, or uses the stairs less. Could be early joint changes.

2. Sleeping more, but waking easily

More sleep alone isn't a problem. But waking easily, restlessness, or pacing at night can hint at age-related confusion.

3. Drinking more water, urinating more often

This one warrants a vet visit sooner rather than later — possibly kidney or endocrine related.

4. Unexplained weight changes

Losing weight while eating the same, or gaining weight without an activity change — both directions deserve a look.

5. Behavior changes

More irritable, more startled by noises, more clingy, or avoiding touch. Sometimes it's pain your pet can't say out loud.
